Mohali: Taking up the onus of leading from the front, Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan scored a quick-fire century on his Test debut on Day 3 at Mohali against Australia. Watch: Shikhar Dhawan slams fastest Test ton
Dhawan’s superb batting display consisted of 21 fours in 85 balls, the fastest 100 by any player in the history of Test match cricket on debut. He surpassed England cricketer Matt Prior's 105-ball ton.
Earlier, the Delhi batsman smashed 12 boundaries to bring up his maiden half-century in Test cricket.
It was Dhawan`s form in the last domestic season and agility on the field that could have prompted the selectors to take the bold decision of dropping Sehwag .
After an unsuccessful tour to the West Indies in 2011, Dhawan turned things around with some impressive performances in the domestic circuit.
He was very consistent this year averaging over 50 in the Ranji Trophy, besides scoring a century in each of North Zone`s two games in the Duleep Trophy.
He also struck a ton against an England XI in a warm-up limited-overs game, before compiling an useful 63 in the first innings of the Irani Cup.
